CPCS Appointed Person (A61)

Introduction

The appointed person in lifting is responsible for safely executing a lifting operation. While they can delegate duties and responsibilities, the appointed person takes sole responsibility for the lifting practices on site.

Designed for lifting operations specifically, the CPCS Appointed Person course teaches delegates the appointed person's responsibilities and how best to fulfil them.

Course Outline

With theory-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover manufacturer, and general knowledge and awareness of lifting operations, safety procedures, and best practices as an Appointed Person.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and we can tailor courses to fit your specific training needs, with the added flexibility provided by our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach to how we work.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers coach delegates on this course, completing the session with an assessment. They must pass the assessment to qualify for the Appointed Person CPCS Red Card Category.

Course Programme

This training is for Supervisors and Managers involved in planning the lifting activity, including cranes, excavators, Forklifts, and Lorry Loaders. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures, documentation, and classifications. We will advise delegates of the necessary managerial and practical considerations in planning lifting operations. They then put this information into practice during simulated workshop planning exercises.

The course content includes:

Introductions and explanation of this Appointed Person CPCS qualification
Legislation controlling crane operations
BS7121 LOLER Regulations - knowledge and implementation
Crane awareness and appreciation activities
Drawing workshops
Crane stability accessories and how to use them
Planned lifting operations methodology and best practices
Risk Assessments and Method Statements
Identifying Crane specifications
Planning a lift scenario
Theory test

On Completion

At the end of the training, successful delegates will interpret and apply sections 1-4 of the BS 7121 Safe Use of Cranes and have sufficient knowledge and information to safely plan lifting operations for mobile cranes on a busy construction site:

  • Implementing safe lifting operations following learned standards and regulations
  • Retaining theoretical understanding of plant operations relevant to the Appointed Person
  • Understanding the operator's responsibilities
  • Recognising the equipment and using the Operator's manual correctly
  • Promoting and implementing safe and best practices in practical plant operating methods
  • Confidently know the relevant legislation, statutory regulations and Codes of Practice for plant lifting equipment

Delegates will receive the CPCS Red Card (Trained Operator) endorsed with the Appointed person category, valid for two years. The A61 Appointed Person is the only CPCS Technical Test that allows the delegate to retake the course if unsuccessful in their CPCS Scenario Test.

Who Should Attend?

The CPCS Appointed Person A61 course is for supervisors and managers responsible for lifting operations who have sufficient experience using cranes, meeting the requirements specified in British Standard 7121 Safe Use of Cranes.

They will also have knowledge of slinging and a CITB health, safety and environment test qualification (managers and professionals' level) taken less than two years before the course start date.
