Entry into Confined Spaces with Escape Breathing Apparatus

Introduction

Medium-risk classified confined spaces are typically team entry where the group moves away from the entry point. For example in spaces  such as aqueducts, man entry sewers, pipe subways, utility tunnels, and complex wet walls. They usually require escape breathing  apparatus or respiratory protection, as it’s sometimes called. But what type? Does the team know how and when to use it? And what about emergency procedures?  This knowledge can save lives, whether people are working or rescuing from the space.

This Citrus certification delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of confined spaces to work safely in a medium-risk area. It is specifically aimed at those working in and around medium-risk confined space operations that require entry and are potentially dangerous.

Course Outline

Made up of a majority of practical exercises, supplemented by classroom-based tutorials, delegates will cover legislative knowledge and awareness while taking part in realistic simulations of confined space entry and exit to fully understand how procedures and protocols work and why they are in place.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to work with Citrus, and we can tailor courses to fit your specific training needs, with the added flexibility provided by our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach to how we work.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers will coach delegates in this one-day course, completing the session with a practical observation and short answer question paper. They must pass both elements to qualify for the certificate.

Course Programme

This training is essential to educate workers operating in medium-risk confined spaces to execute work in such areas safely. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.

The course will take delegates through;

The dangers associated with confined space working
How to risk-assess a confined space
How to classify a confined space using national classification guidelines
Different types of breathing apparatus and when they are appropriate
How to carry out pre-entry checks on equipment and why
Correct and safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
The necessary manning levels - taking into account their risk-assessment and safety procedures  for a medium-risk space
The reasoning for periodic examinations of equipment
The emergency procedures when working in a medium-risk confined space

On Completion

At the end of the training, successful delegates will be able to;

Understand confined space legislation and how classifications are given (NC, low/medium/high-risk)
Produce safe systems of work for entry into confined spaces, including point of works risk assessment
Recognise diseases and understand the necessary personal hygiene requirements associated with confined spaces
Identify types and administer the  safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
Know how to use personal protective equipment, including  harnesses and access equipment
Identify and know how to use respiratory protective equipment - particular focus on escape
React competently and confidently in an emergency
Manage atmospheric hazards - gas, chemicals, harmful substances, oxygen and more
Administer emergency procedures for safe working practices

Who Should Attend?

This Citrus Certification is for people who want to work in medium-risk confined space activities aged 16 or over and are medically fit to participate.

Things You Need to Know

This Citrus Certifed course has practical elements, so delegates must be medically fit to train. Therefore, they must inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in conducting elements of this training course.

We can also run this course at your venue using our fully accredited Mobile Confined Space Units.
