Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management (Building and Civil Engineering)

Introduction

Building and Civil Engineering is big business and affects everyone in their everyday lives. The sector involves designing and executing structural works that serve the general public, including aqueducts, dams, bridges, canals, highways, power plants, sewerage systems, and also airports, railways and more. Managing construction sites within this sector is a layered and critical obligation, with a duty of care and responsibility for the teams in operation and the project's success.

This Level 6 Construction Site Management – Building and Civil Engineering qualification enables delegates to demonstrate and recognise skills, knowledge and understanding and demonstrate competence in a real workplace environment.

The qualification prepares people for work in a management capacity in the construction sector.

Course Outline

We assess delegates against performance and knowledge statements derived from National Occupational Standards - the Recommended Qualification Structure for Construction Site Management in Level 6.

While producing a portfolio of evidence, delegates will show how they have met each unit's performance and knowledge criteria required within the qualification, as directed by their assessor.

To pass this qualification, delegates must successfully complete and achieve all nineteen Mandatory Units and one Optional unit. 

Course Programme

Delegates taking this Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management – Building and Civil Engineering will cover knowledge, skills, and practices in learning management fundamentals for construction.

The course content includes:

Mandatory Units - must achieve all nineteen:

  • Planning the preparation of the site for the project
  • Organising, controlling and monitoring supplies of materials in the workplace
  • Monitoring project activities
  • Managing personal development in the workplace
  • Managing the installation, maintenance, monitoring and removal of temporary works
  • Identifying, allocating and planning the deployment and use of plant, equipment or machinery
  • Identifying and maintaining communication systems and organisational procedures
  • Evaluating feedback and making recommendations in the workplace.
  • Evaluating and confirming work methods in the workplace
  • Establishing, implementing and maintaining organisational systems for managing health, safety, welfare and wellbeing in the workplace
  • Establishing, controlling and monitoring environmental factors and sustainability in the workplace.
  • Establishing workplace dimensional control criteria
  • Ensuring that work activities and resources meet project work requirements
  • Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
  • Controlling project quantities and costs
  • Project progress control following agreed quality standards
  • Project progress control following approved workplace programmes
  • Contributing to the identification of a work team in the workplace
  • Allocating work and monitoring people's performance in the workplace

Optional Units- must achieve one of the following:

  • Planning tunnelling activities
  • Planning demolition activities
  • Planning and scheduling the maintenance activities of property, services or systems
  • Planning activities for traditional and heritage buildings and structures
  • Managing the project handover
  • Enabling workplace learning opportunities
On Completion

Upon successfully completing this qualification, delegates will have the skills, knowledge, understanding, and competence to progress to a higher-level qualification in the same or similar occupational area. They can also take employment as Construction Site Managers.

The construction industry will accept this qualification on its own as entry to a job role. 

Finally, as a result of completing the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management – Building and Civil Engineering, delegates can apply for the CSCS Black Card as long as they perform management work on the site.  

Who Should Attend?

Any person or employee currently working or is actively moving into a management capacity role and needs to obtain a Black CSCS card and a nationally recognised qualification. 

Course Duration

Time taken for a course can vary due to delegates’ experience and circumstances. We advise between 12 and 18 months from induction to complete this Level 6 NVQ.

Take an NVQ with Citrus Training, and we allocate a dedicated Assessor to each delegate, whose role is to communicate with and support delegates throughout their NVQ. They do this through a mixture of face-to-face meetings, online meetings and e-mail communications. 

Our assessors are fully qualified and occupationally experienced from construction backgrounds to deliver Supervisory or Management NVQ qualifications within Construction. They travel nationwide to provide the necessary support for Supervisory or Management NVQ qualifications. 

Things You Need to Know

The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management – Building and Civil Engineering qualification is designed to occur in a real workplace environment. This means delegates must be employed to take this qualification. 

Before joining the course, delegates must ensure they can gather the necessary evidence to meet all performance requirements set out in the standards. 

Once the candidate has completed their NVQ and obtained their CSCS Black Card, their CSCS card is valid for five years. It can be renewed by a Construction Skills Supervisor with a touch screen Health and Safety test, revalidating it for another five years.

Some NVQs can be completed as part of our apprenticeship programme, which can offer a fully funded NVQ, subject to eligibility.

We offer NVQ in plant and lifting operations. We also offer supervisory and management NVQs.

Yes, NVQ in plant and lifting operations can lead to a CPCS or NPORS blue card. Level 3-4 supervisory NVQs can lead to a gold supervisors CSCS card and level 5-7 management NVQs can lead to a black manager’s CSCS card.

No, in order to complete an NVQs you must be working in the appropriate role. Evidence must be gathered for the NVQ portfolio, which will not be possible unless you’re are actively doing the relevant job. Once registered for an NVQ, you can apply for a red trainee supervisor’s/manager’s card which will allow you to carry out supervisory/managerial duties on site with s valid CSCS card.

We require a 50% initial payment, which is non-refundable and the remaining 50% is paid on completion.

NVQs can take between 6 to 18 month, depending on the NVQ you take. This can take longer if being completed as part of an apprenticeship. The assessor will arrange visits with you as needed until your portfolio is complete.

Once we have received your signed NVQ contract and initial payment, you will be allocated an assessor who will be in touch with you/your line manager to arrange your initial visit. This initial contact can take up to 6-8 weeks and subsequent visits will be arranged as needed.

NVQs are a lifetime award, so the certificate will not expire. To renew your CSCS card, you just need to retake the appropriate Health and Safety Touch Screen Test.
