Safe Use of Abrasive Wheels (Petrol Cut Off and Hand Held Angle Grinders)

Introduction

Thanks to their impressive cutting power, petrol cut-off saws, or chop saws as they are sometimes known, are excellent for cutting small sections of hardcore material such as stone, concrete and steel. The handheld angle grinder is typically used in metal fabrication but is also handy when working with concrete, hardwoods and other dense materials, for cutting, grinding, deburring, finishing and polishing. They are usually powered by corded electricity or by battery and are a mainstay in a construction worker's kit.

This Citrus Safe Use of Abrasive Wheels (Petrol Driven Cut Off and Handheld Angle Grinders) qualification enables delegates to demonstrate skill, knowledge, and competence in using these power tools safely and to comply with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).

Course Outline

Through a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover manufacturer and general knowledge and awareness of abrasive wheel cutting equipment and participate in practical activities to learn best practices and operating methods to use them.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates will benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers coach delegates on this course, completing the session with a practical observation and short answer question paper. They must pass the assessment to qualify for the ​​Citrus accredited certificate and ID card, valid for three years.

Delegates taking this Safe Use of Abrasive Wheels (Petrol Driven Cut Off and Handheld Angle Grinders) training will cover knowledge, skills and operating practice.

Course content includes:

  • Legal requirements and responsibilities when handling abrasive wheels
  • Hazard identification and causes
  • Creating a safe work area
  • Machinery selection and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Method of marking, storing, handling and transporting
  • Storage, checking and use of discs
  • Machine checks - specifically of a petrol driven cut saw and handheld angle grinder
  • Mounting an abrasive disc
  • Practical session cutting of a range of materials
On Completion

Upon successfully completing this qualification, delegates will confidently:

  • Understand legal requirements and responsibility for the safe use of abrasive wheels
  • Identify a potential hazard and its potential risks
  • Select the appropriate machinery and PPE required for the work
  • Choose appropriate safety equipment and carry out learned pre-use checks
  • Be able to correctly mark, store, handle and transport abrasive wheels and any ancillary equipment such as discs
  • Conduct a practical exercise using a petrol driven saw cut off and handheld angle grinder in a safe and efficient manner
  • Safely mount an abrasive disc on the machine ready for use

Things You Need to Know

The content of this course includes awareness of periodic examinations of equipment. The course does not provide full training in maintaining equipment. Additional training is available, contact us to learn more.

Delegates must be 18 or over. Before starting the course, they must inform their trainer of any special considerations, medication or physical restrictions that may cause difficulties in any part of the training.

All delegates must bring a passport photograph on the day of training for the production of ID cards.

A CITB grant is available for companies registered with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Enquire to learn more about funding options.

All delegates must bring their own PPE with them on the day. A full list of requirements will be sent out to you pre-course.

We can provide a Petrol cut off and handheld grinder but if you require a bench grinder on-site you will need to provide one.

This is a half-day training course.
