Introduction

Substations are located around the country. They are used to step  down high voltage electricity from the transmission system into lower voltage electricity, to supply to homes and businesses through lower voltage distribution lines. Power and electricity distribution companies are responsible for substations and the power lines networks that feed them and provide electricity to your home or business. You will see substations dotted around your locality of varying sizes depending on the output required of them.

There are four main types of substation:

• Low Voltage Secondary Substations  
• High Voltage Substations (HV Substations) – Involving voltages between 11kV and 66kV
• Extra High Voltage Substations (EHV)– Involving voltages between 132kV and 400kV
• Ultra High Voltage(UHV) – Operating voltage above 400kV

This Citrus Substation Awareness qualification takes delegates through the awareness and regulatory requirements of electrical substations specifically.

Course Outline

Through theory-based exercises and tutorials, this Citrus Substation Awareness qualification gives delegates the understanding and knowledge of the dangers with entering substations.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates will benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers coach delegates on this course in the Jointing School, completing the session with a short answer question paper. They must pass the assessment to qualify for the Citrus certificate of attendance, valid for three years.

• Introduction to Substations
• Selecting the appropriate PPE for substation work
• Basic electrical theory
• Dangers associated with the Distribution system
• Locking systems and security
• Carrying out risk assessments
• Dangers of entering substations
• Components of substations and their functions
• Recognising exposed live Low-Voltage boards in secondary Substations.
• Automatic CO2 fire protection
• Recognising substation equipment in Secondary, Main Substation and grid sites
• Distribution Safety Rules

On Completion

Upon successfully completing this qualification, delegates will be able to:

• Carry out risk assessments

And have an understanding of: 

• Dangers associated with substation entry
• Basic electrical theory and the Distribution system
• Components and their functions of Substations
• Equipment and signs of distress
• Functions of Substations
• Health and Safety issues and how to rectify them

Who Should Attend?

This Citrus Substation Awareness qualification is for anyone with an electrical background including LV and HV linesman, fitters and cable jointers.

This is a one-day theory awareness training course.

Things You Need to Know

Delegates must be 18 or over. Before starting the course, they must inform their trainer of any special considerations, medication or physical restrictions that may cause difficulties in any part of the training.

Operators can only obtain entry authorisation through the Network Operator. This course does not authorise anyone for entry.

All delegates must bring a passport photograph to the training to produce ID cards.
