Temporary Works Co-ordinator (CITB) - Virtual

Introduction

We should not confuse temporary with quick and easy - far from the case; there is a lot to consider in implementing temporary works, from in-depth preparation in health and safety to design briefs, hiring subcontractors, legal wranglings and more.

This Temporary Works Co-ordinator course looks at health and safety, coordination, implementation and management of temporary works operations. Training provides delegates with a sound and broad knowledge base enabling them to manage the necessary elements. The course has the support of several organisations, including the Temporary Works Forum, CECA, Build UK (previously UKCG), HSE and FMB.

Course Outline

This course consists of classroom-based exercises and tutorials featuring best practice sharing, group work, video, and case studies. In addition, delegates will cover legislative and practical knowledge and implementation of temporary works coordination.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. Learn with Citrus, and delegates benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced educators will coach and assess delegates throughout this two-day course, finishing the session with a final exam. To qualify for the certificate, they must pass the examinations with a minimum 72% pass grade, for which they will receive a five-year certification.

Course Programme

This training is essential for coordinators to learn the vast and varied elements of temporary works measures and controls. Delegates will review legal requirements, learn safety measures, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures.

The course will take delegates through:

  • BS5975:2019 code of practice for temporary works procedures
  • Regulations and Codes of Practice for all temporary works operations
  • Design checks and standard solutions

On Completion

On completing this Temporary Works Coordinator course, delegates will:

  • Be able to implement risk management: safety and business-related

This will allow the Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC) to:

  • Understand the need for and duties of a TWC
  • Understand the role of others
  • Have detailed knowledge and understanding of BS5975:2019 relating to this role

Things You Need to Know

For TWC training held at your location, please ensure that the classroom available has a 240v power supply and is suitable, safe and risk assessed for the number of delegates attending.

In addition, delegates must inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course so that we can make adjustments where possible.

Delegates can only take the Temporary Work Coordinator Refresher if they have completed the course in the last five years.

Delegates must also have working knowledge of the following legislation:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
  • The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992
  • The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • The Work at Height Regulations 2005.

A key issue for temporary works is health and safety, so learners need to be prepared to discuss how health and safety legislation is relevant to temporary works, as well as which Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) and guidance notes may assist or contribute to safe practices in temporary works.

Learners need to be prepared to discuss and explore all the core health and safety factors that are integrated into temporary works processes at all stages of a project, from initiation to closure. They will need to have working knowledge of all associated legislation, specifically the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 in terms of its intention and compliance. Learners must also have a thorough understanding of health and safety principles and understand the importance of risk management, design considerations, inspection and testing and recording and monitoring requirements.

Learners who have achieved a certificate approved against the Health and Safety in Construction Site Supervision standard (such as SSSTS or SSSTS-R) or the Health and Safety in Construction Site Management standard (such as SMSTS or SMSTS-R), will have gained the knowledge to meet these expectations. This is not a mandatory pre-requisite, but learners with these achievements will benefit from having this knowledge before attending the course.

To further support learners, CITB has created a Temporary works awareness eLearning which provides a foundation of the points that will be expanded on in this course. It explores how health and safety legislation plays a pivotal role in temporary works, and how documents which are common to more generic construction activities are a useful aid for planning and the ongoing management and monitoring of temporary works.

Learners may also find it helpful to complete the Temporary works awareness eLearning provided by CITB, which is free to access on the CITB website.
