CSCS Black Cards

CSCS Black Cards - proven managerial competence and skill

Most professional and well-run construction companies will require proof of competence on site, whether for entry-level labour or senior management positions. While not a legal requirement, company policy can dictate whether a worker is permitted to go on-site, which is now standard across the industry.

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Black Card is for managerial positions, providing evidence of competency, confidence and knowledge and proving that the holder is compliant with Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM). CDM compliance is essential for construction firms across industries to show that their employees can operate skillfully and safely.

There are benefits for the holder, too, with increased employability, earning potential and quality job opportunities to be taken advantage of.

The CSCS Black Card is specifically for managerial and technical positions. At Citrus, we can prepare and qualify you or your team for the Manager’s Black Card application.

Courses we offer

Applying for a CSCS card requires the applicant to hold qualifications or certifications from various options, as there is no one CSCS card-specific course to take. To apply for a Black Card, allowing holders to carry out managerial and technical roles on-site or within a construction environment, Citrus Training offers:

Applicants must hold certification for a Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7.

Plus,

HS&E - Health, Safety & Environment touch screen test to demonstrate a basic health, safety and environmental awareness level and prove they can work safely on a job. For the Green Labourer Card, applicants must pass the Operative HS&E test. You will need to retake the HS&E touchscreen test when renewing your Black Card, which is required every five years.

Once qualified, with both in hand, participants can apply for the CSCS Black managerial card.

Things you need to know…

How to apply for a CSCS Black Card
Once delegates have their qualifications ready, they will need to apply directly for the relevant CSCS card or through their employer; we cannot do this on their behalf. The best way to apply is through the CSCS online service, which is available 24/7 and has options for individuals, employers, and single and bulk applications. There you will also find alternative ways to contact them should online be an issue, but we always recommend going to the online service first.

How much does a CSCS Black Card cost?
Course prices are available here for the relevant qualifications to apply for the CSCS Black Card. The card application itself costs £36.00 and can be purchased online or over the phone.

When will the CSCS card arrive?
Once an application is submitted and approved, CSCS will issue the card and post it the next working day. There is a grace period of up to ten days, so if your card is delayed for any reason after ten days, you must contact CSCS so they can look into it or reissue.

Renewing and replacing CSCS cards
Firstly, to renew or replace a card, holders must have an up-to-date pass qualification for the HS&E test, completed within the last two years before application.

With this in place, holders can renew cards from six months before or up to six months after the expiry date on the card. A renewed CSCS card will have the original CSCS card's expiry date plus the renewal's lifespan (full T&Cs can be found here).
