Balfour Beatty

Case Study

The Brief

Our client needed to streamline their supply chain while enhancing consistency in training delivery. Balfour Beatty needed to see the following results:

  • Tangible cost savings by leveraging the national Balfour Beatty group-wide training spend
  • Improved Quality Management of training, nationwide
  • An increase in understanding and technical knowledge, best practices and National Occupational Standards to define Balfour Beatty’s competency standard framework

Our Approach

On winning the appointment following the formal tender process in 2016, Citrus Training put together a tactical plan to serve Balfour Beatty’s Safety, Health and Technical training framework. The contract covers self-delivery through the large network of Citrus technical venues and ‘off-site’ training delivery as well as management and delivery of commercial, sub-contracted, training providers.

Supporting Balfour Beatty’s 26,000 strong workforce, Citrus Training completed in excess of 1,400 training events over 3,500 training days, in-line with over 100 competency standards throughout the UK in 2020. We used a combination of Citrus Training venues, Balfour Beatty office and site locations, and a large partnership of commercial partner venues. Citrus Training has supported Balfour Beatty’s sub-contract supply chain nationally, delivering their defined standards and supporting their behaviours and cultures throughout our training delivery and in support of Balfour Beatty’s responsible procurement strategy.

The Result

We met every target and objective set out from the beginning. The commercial benefits include a reduction in ‘cost per head’, reducing from £350.00 per head to £249.00, achieved through Citrus’s commercial agreements, supply chain management and self-delivering a vast proportion of training. This is further supported by a consistent set of reduced term cancellation costs, which have dropped by over 25% based on pre-contract data (circa £20K annual saving).

Over 82% of Balfour Beatty delegates reported training as good/excellent across each delegate feedback measure. And with over 1400 training events across 3500 days, we delivered understanding, technical knowledge and best practices to the Balfour Beatty workforce thus defining their competency standards framework.
