Entry into Confined Spaces with Airline Breathing Apparatus

Introduction

Breathing apparatus or respiratory protection is usually required when entering and working in high-risk classified confined spaces such as tunnels, shafts, and gas works. But what type? And does the team know how and when to use it? What about emergency procedures? This knowledge and understanding can save lives, whether people are working or rescuing from the space.

This Citrus certification delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of confined spaces to work safely in a high-risk area with airline breathing apparatus. It is specifically aimed at those working in and around high-risk confined space operations that require entry and are particularly hazardous.

Course Outline

With a mix of practical and classroom-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover legislative knowledge and awareness while taking part in a realistic simulation of confined space entry to fully understand how procedures and protocols work and why they are in place.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited  in line with regulations. In addition, choose to work with Citrus, and we can tailor courses to fit your specific training needs, with the added flexibility provided by our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach to how we work.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers will coach delegates in this one-day course, completing the session with a practical observation and written assessment. They must pass both elements to qualify for the certificate.

Course Programme

This training is essential to educate workers operating in high-risk confined spaces to safely execute work in these areas using airline breathing apparatus. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.

The learnings will take delegates through;

  • The dangers associated with confined space working
  • How to risk-assess a confined space
  • How to classify a confined space using national classification guidelines
  • Different types of breathing apparatus and when they are appropriate
  • How to carry out pre-entry checks on equipment and why
  • Correct and safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
  • The necessary manning levels - taking into account their risk-assessment and safety procedures
  • Why there is a need for periodic examinations of equipment
  • The emergency procedures when working in a high-risk confined space
On Completion

At the end of the training, successful delegates will be able to;

  • Understand confined space legislation and how classifications are given (NC, low/medium/high-risk)
  • Produce safe systems of work for entry into confined spaces including point of works risk assessment
  • Recognise diseases and understand the necessary personal hygiene requirements associated with confined spaces.
  • Identify types and administer the  safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
  • Know how to use personal protective equipment, i.e., harnesses and access equipment
  • Identify and how to use respiratory protective equipment - with a particular focus on airline
  • React competently during an emergency situation
  • Identify types of access equipment and when to use them
  • Atmospheric hazards - gas, chemicals, harmful substances, oxygen and more
  • Emergency procedures for safe working practices
Who Should Attend?

This Citrus Certification is for people who want to conduct work in high-risk confined space activities aged 16 or over and are medically fit to participate.

Course Duration

This comprehensive two-day course trains delegates to safely and responsibly work in high-risk confined space operations and the challenges, processes and protocols involved on completion and certification.
