Introduction

The Telescopic Handler is a machine used for lifting, moving and placing materials and equipment.  A common sight on construction sites and sometimes known as a telehandler, teleporter, or boom lift, it is essentially a forklift with a boom giving it the extra benefits of a crane.  Its single telescopic or articulating boom extends forward and upwards, adjusting the maximum reach of the machine to serve various jobs and purposes. 

Telescopic Handlers move loads such as bricks, sand, and wood at weight ranging from two to seven tonnes and more. It works with various attachments making it an adaptable and versatile industry appliance on site.

This A17c CPCS certification tests the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of safely using a Telescopic Handler.

Course Outline

Depending on the experience of the delegate, Citrus can offer refresher training or the delegate can opt to just take their CPCS test. The theory test will take delegates through their general knowledge of a Telescopic Handler. In addition, they’ll participate in practical activities to test their knowledge on the machine's components and functions, best practices, and operating methods.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with CPCS regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates will benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers will guide delegates through their theory and pratical test. They must pass to qualify for the CPCS red card (Trained Operator), valid for two years per category held.

Course Programme

This training is essential for workers to operate a Telehandler safely. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.

The test will take delegates through;

• Theoretical knowledge of plant operations
• Operator’s responsibilities with regards to daily/weekly checks of the machine
• Basic construction, names of components, purpose and use of controls
• Use of handbook and other information sources, including legislation and Approved Codes of Practice
• Pre-use, start, running checks and close down procedure
• Preparing the telescopic handler for site and road travel
• Travelling the telescopic handler over different terrain, including rough, undulating ground and substantial inclines using different wheel drive and steer combinations
• Manoeuvring, progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction
• Carry out minor adjustments and routine service procedures
• Loading vehicles and hoppers
• Removing and re-attaching different attachments
• Placing the telescopic handler in an out of service condition
• Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter

On Completion

At the end of the test, successful delegates will:

• Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for a Telescopic Handler
• Confidently locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
• Be able to locate and identify key controls on a Telescopic Handler and explain their functions
• Conduct all pre-operational and running checks following manufacturer's and legislative requirements
• Be able to prepare a Telescopic Handler for use and operate the machine safely and efficiently, adhering to all A17c usage and protocols
• Perform specific loading and unloading tasks and operations as practiced throughout the course
• Confidently carry out all end of work and shut down procedures

Upon successfully completing the test, delegates receive their CPCS red card (Trained Operator), valid for two years per category held.

This Telescopic Handler A17c CPCS Certification is for Plant Operators who are experienced in operating a telescopic handler and need to take their test to obtain their CPCS Red Card to do their job.

Things You Need to Know

This CPCS A17c Certifed test has practical elements, so delegates must inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in any elements of the training. 

Delegates must pass the CSCS Health, Safety and Environment touchscreen test for Operatives within the past two years.
