Introduction

Using a link box in electrical works helps to reduce or eliminate the electrical losses in an electrical cable, typically in high-voltage work. A fuse board - in this case, low-voltage - distributes electricity from the mains supply to individual circuits around a property, such as lighting, broadband, and appliances. Operators and engineers need to be well versed in both of these devices to carry out linking and fusing and conduct their work safely and effectively.

This Citrus Low Voltage Switching  (Linking and Fusing) qualification takes delegates through the techniques, procedures, LV control, and regulatory requirements to Link and Fuse under instruction from an Appointed Person and the Senior Appointed Person.  

Course Outline

Delegates will focus on the practicalities of Linking and Fusing, carrying out activities on Live Link Boxes and LV Fuse Boards. They’ll also focus on hazard awareness in the Electricity Network, including the six Distribution Network Operators (DNO) and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNO).

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates will benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers coach delegates on this course in the Jointing School, completing the session with a practical observation and short answer question paper. They must pass the assessment to qualify for the Citrus certificate of attendance, valid for three years.

Once delegates have the certificate of attendance, this then allows them to work under personal supervision until they complete their trade test or authorisation assessment.

• Health and Safety Law relating to electrical works
• Distribution Safety Rules
• Selecting the appropriate PPE for Linking and Fusing
• Electrical Switching theory
• The dangers associated with the Distribution System
• Link Boxes and their operational uses
• Operating Low-Voltage Fuse Boards
• Test Lamp instruction and use
• Carrying out relevant risk assessments

On Completion

Upon successfully completing this qualification, delegates will be able to:

• Demonstrate basic electrical theory on the distribution networks
• Recognise signs of distress or failure
• Understanding the functions of a Link Box and Low Voltage Distribution Board
• Carry out re-energising processes on Low-Voltage circuits after Low-Voltage task completion
• Identify and rectify Health and Safety issues

This Citrus Low Voltage Switching qualification is for anyone with a background in Low Voltage Cable Jointing on the Low Voltage Mains Network and those with experience as Substation Fitters and Overhead Linesman.

Things You Need to Know

To take this course, delegates must already be authorised, competent and have experience in:

• Substation entry
• Confined spaces
• First aid at work
• Manual handling

 And:

• Experience of LV Mains Jointing on the Networks or
• Overhead Linesman's work or
• Low-Voltage works with the knowledge of 1:500 drawings

Before starting the course, they must inform their trainer of any special considerations, medication or physical restrictions that may cause difficulties in any part of the training.

PPE must be worn, which delegates will need to provide:

• Flame retardant overalls
• Safety footwear
• General purpose gloves
• LV gloves
• Protective eyewear safety glasses
• full face visor
• Hard hat
• Hi-vis clothing

All delegates must bring a passport photograph to the training to produce ID cards.
