Introduction
High-risk classified confined spaces are team entry operations into spaces such as tunnels, shafts, gas works, and places of restricted access that pose a significant threat to safety. They can require full working breathing apparatus to carry out works or rescue. But what type? Does the team know how and when to use it? And what about emergency procedures? This knowledge can save lives.
This Citrus certification delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of confined spaces to work safely in a high-risk area using self-contained breathing apparatus. It is specifically aimed at those working in and around high-risk confined space operations requiring entry and particularly dangerous.
Course Outline
Made up of a majority of practical exercises, supplemented by classroom-based tutorials, delegates will cover legislative knowledge and awareness while taking part in realistic simulations of confined space entry and exit to fully understand how procedures and protocols work and why they are in place.
The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully compliant in line with regulations. In addition, choose to work with Citrus, and we can tailor courses to fit your specific training needs, with the added flexibility provided by our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach to how we work.
Our occupationally and technically-experienced trainers will coach delegates in this two-day course, completing the session with a practical observation and short answer question paper. They must pass both elements to qualify for the certificate.
Course Programme
This training is essential to educate workers operating in high-risk confined spaces to execute work in such areas safely. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.
The course will take delegates through;
- The dangers associated with confined space working
- How to risk-assess a confined space
- How to classify a confined space using national classification guidelines
- Different types of breathing apparatus and when they are appropriate
- How to carry out pre-entry and pre-wearer checks on equipment and why
- Correct and safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
- The necessary manning levels - taking into account their risk-assessment and safety procedures for a high-risk space
- The reasoning for periodic examinations of equipment
- The emergency procedures when working in a high-risk confined space
- Performing an entry using self-contained breathing apparatus
On Completion
At the end of the training, successful delegates will be able to;
- Understand confined space legislation and how classifications are given (NC, low/medium/high-risk)
- Produce safe systems of work for entry into confined spaces, including point of works risk assessment
- Recognise diseases and understand the necessary personal hygiene requirements associated with confined spaces
- Identify types and administer the safe use of atmospheric monitoring equipment
- Know how to use personal protective equipment, including harnesses and access equipment
- Identify and know how to use respiratory protective equipment - particular focus on escape and self-contained breathing apparatus
- React competently and confidently in an emergency
- Manage atmospheric hazards - gas, chemicals, harmful substances, oxygen and more
- Administer emergency procedures for safe working practices
Who Should Attend?
This Citrus Certification is for people who want to work in high-risk confined space activities aged 16 or over and are medically fit to participate.
Course Duration
This comprehensive two-day course trains delegates to safely and responsibly work in high-risk confined space operations and the challenges, processes and protocols involved.
