Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational Health and Safety practitioners and, specifically, Health and Safety (H&S) Officers are vital to the well-being of workers and the success of a project and keep productivity high. The Health and Safety Officer must have the multi-discipline knowledge, skills and expertise to predict, manage, and therefore prevent or drastically reduce risk. Ultimately, the responsibilities and actions all parties take to comply with legislation are managed and implemented by Health and Safety Officers in any line of work.

This Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety qualification enables delegates to demonstrate and recognise skills, knowledge and understanding and demonstrate competence in a real workplace environment. They are designed for professionals working in occupational health and safety practitioner positions in the construction sector to develop and prove knowledge and competency. As it is a generic course, anyone working in Health and Safety professions across different sectors and industries can study.

Course Outline

We assess delegates against performance and knowledge statements derived from National Occupational Standards - the Recommended Qualification Structure for Occupational Health and Safety Level 3.

While producing a portfolio of evidence, delegates will show how they have met each unit's performance and knowledge criteria required within the qualification, as directed by their assessor.

To pass this qualification, delegates must successfully complete and achieve all five Mandatory Units and two Optional Units.

Course Programme

Delegates taking this Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety will cover knowledge, skills, and practices to develop their skills and knowledge of health and safety within the workplace.

The course content includes:

  • Mandatory Units - must achieve all five
  • Comply with health and safety requirements in the workplace
  • Awareness of hazards in the workplace
  • Personal actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Control work operations safely
  • Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of a workplace

Optional Units - must achieve two of the following:

  • Develop procedures to safely control work operations
  • Investigate and evaluate health and safety incidents and complaints at work
  • Review health and safety procedures at workplaces other than their own
  • Supervise health, safety and welfare of individuals at work
On Completion

Upon successfully completing this qualification, delegates will have the skills, knowledge, understanding and proven competence to take responsibility for occupational health and safety within an organisation and progress to more specialist roles such as supervisory and management positions in the workplace.

The construction industry will accept this qualification on its own as entry to a job role.

Finally, as a result of completing the NVQ Level 3 Occupational Health and Safety, delegates can apply for the CSCS Gold Card as long as they perform health and safety work on the site.

Who Should Attend?

This qualification is open to anyone to study with no requirements for previous formal training. Available to delegates age 18 and over, they must have the relevant resources and assessment opportunities to take the qualification and, therefore, must be in employment.

Course Duration
