The mobile crane is an on-site essential in building works, transporting goods, lifting apparatus and moving materials. Used extensively on construction projects and sites across the world, they are relatively simple to operate for the trained worker and are often out on hire or lease from plant hire companies. That said, they are potentially dangerous in the wrong hands, with crane collapse and load falling from height a real possibility and ones to avoid. High-quality and stringent training will significantly reduce the possibility of these incidents happening and keep everyone involved safe.
This Mobile Crane N101 NPORS certification delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate a mobile crane safely and effectively. It is for plant operators who require practical and theory-based training and assessment to operate a mobile crane on-site.
Through a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover manufacturer and general knowledge and responsibilities when operating a mobile crane while participating in practical plant operating activities, safety procedures, and best practices. They will look at the following variations:
- Wheeled mobile
- Lorry mounted
- Trailer mounted
The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations standards set by NPORS. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates will benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.
Occupationally and technically-experienced trainers coach delegates on this course, completing the session with an NPORS practical observation and short answer question paper. They must pass the assessment to qualify for:
- NPORS/CSCS Construction Plant Operator Card, valid for two years.
- Traditional Operators card, valid for three to five years depending on sector-specific or in-company requirements
This training is essential for workers to operate a mobile crane safely. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures, appropriate documentation and classifications.
The course content includes:
- All pre-use checks
- Configuring and setting a mobile crane for travel (site and highway)
- Travelling the mobile crane to an area of work
- Manoeuvring in confined spaces
- Configuring the mobile crane for lifting duties
- Deploying outriggers to specification (where applicable)
- Explaining the action to take for hazards, underground and overhead services
- Programming and setting up Rated Capacity Indicators for lifting duties
- Lifting various loads using the full radius and slewing capabilities of a mobile crane
- Accurately placing loads
- Changing falls of rope on a hook block
- Minimising load swinging
- Moving loads through machine travel (where applicable)
- Maintaining safe working situations
- Complying with signals and instructions
- Explaining rigging and de-rigging procedures when fitting fly jibs or boom extensions
- Dismantling the mobile crane in preparation for movement
- Carrying out shut down and securing procedures of a mobile crane
At the end of the training, successful delegates can safely and competently operate a mobile crane on a construction site.
On successful completion of the course:
Construction industry delegates
Operators will receive a Trained Operator CSCS/NPORS Card valid for two years from the test date.
In order to upgrade your CSCS/NPORS card you need to achieve the requisite (S)NVQ with the units applicable to the category (S) of plant held on their trained operator card
Non-construction industry delegates
Anyone operating in industry sectors other than construction is not required to hold an operator card bearing the CSCS logo and can have the NPORS (Traditional) Operator Card.
End users can select three or five-year registrations for this card depending on sector-specific or in-company requirements.
