NRSW Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (LA)

In the often high-risk projects of NRSW, locating and avoiding underground apparatus and services is a fundamental activity and one that requires acute attention to detail. As such, location and avoidance are mandatory for operatives and supervisors as part of a full qualification in NRSW knowledge and operations.

This Certification and Assessment Board for the Water Industry (CABWI) certification delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of NRSWA Unit 1 - Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (LA). It is primarily aimed at Operatives and Supervisors who have to locate underground apparatus for work on the roadways and highways.

Course Outline

With a mix of practical, video, and classroom-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover legislative and administrative knowledge and awareness while taking part in practical tuition, focusing on location and avoidance of apparatus throughout.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Citrus, and delegates benefit from training in our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach to how we do business.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced educators will assess delegates in this one-day course, awarding delegates following simulated assessments and a multiple-choice exam.

Course Programme

This training is essential for operatives and supervisors to learn the legislative framework, practical actions they must take, safety principles and more in NRSW. In addition, delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.

The course content includes:

  • New Roads and Street Works Act
  • Basic principles of location and avoidance of underground services
  • Hazard identification and the risks associated with them
  • Reading and interpreting site plans
  • Identifying duct and cable
  • Practical use of equipment
On Completion

At the end of the assessment, successful delegates will:

  • Understand the basic principles of the NRSW Act and CABWI standards
  • Identify potential risks to themselves and others
  • Read and understand site plans.
  • Operate cable avoidance tools to avoid or locate underground apparatus

Once the delegate has their CABWI certificate, we will then send off for their SWQR card, which will enable them to gain access to the site.
