Introduction
Heat and chemical resistant, asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material once commonplace in the construction industry. The importation, supply and use of all asbestos have been banned in the UK since 1999, but it is still found in residential and commercial buildings and sites built pre-ban across the country. Highly toxic when mishandled and disturbed, asbestos is a primary cause of Asbestosis and Mesothelioma - serious lung conditions resulting from inhaling asbestos fibres.
This UKATA Asbestos Awareness certification delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of the hazards and risks posed by asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in their everyday working environment and the legislative measures safeguarding themselves and others affected. It is specifically aimed at Supervisors and site-based and trades personnel working in residential and commercial builds.
Course Outline
The course is primarily a tutor lead power point presentation; however, interaction and discussion are strongly encouraged. Content will include the origin and nature of asbestos, the history of its use, the reasons it is so dangerous and the illnesses it causes. There is a large section of photographs of asbestos containing materials and the course is completed with a section on the law and regulations.
