Tackling the engineer skills gap challenge

The supply chain faces significant challenges with the availability of skilled people with network experience. Against the backdrop of an ambitious Government with plans to connect full-fibre to 15 million premises by 2025 and 5G deployment to the majority of the UK by 2027, this engineer resource constraint threatens to challenge those deadlines without a recruit, train, and retain intervention. Supporting the Government's commitment to gigabit speed technology, we play an integral role in supporting the recruitment and re-training of over 25,000 people since 2019.

We support the Openreach Civils Engineer recruitment and training drive, delivering Openreach Civils accreditations to thousands of staff at our training centres across the UK over the last six years.

Our specialist Telecoms training team are Civils experts and have developed the Civils new recruit programme to meet industry needs. Since 2005 they have trained 32,000 delegates in the Telecomms sector.

Right now, the demand for work far outweighs trained operatives to conduct it. With no dedicated national provider for some of the specialist training required, there is a need in the market for more quality and consistent training. So, as part of our ongoing improvement strategy, we will develop more courses, increase our offering, and make a significant contribution to ensuring consistency in training available to businesses and operatives, working closely with asset owners and awarding bodies to achieve this. Ultimately, our aim is to be the telecoms sector’s preferred choice for training by 2023.
